(Aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog kreeg Colonel Bogey in Groot-Brittannië een andere wending. De Britse soldaten op weg naar het front doopten de song om in Hitler Has Only Got One Ball, waarbij naar de testikels van de führer werd verwezen. Zo werd met sekshumor de nazileider bespot.

Aanvankelijk heette het liedje Göring Has Only Got One Ball. Hermann Göring, de opperbevelhebber van de Luftwaffe, was tijdens de Bierkellerputsch in 1923 door de politie in zijn lies geschoten, hetgeen zelfs jaren later nog een gemakkelijke aanleiding bleek om de naziminister belachelijk te maken. Later werd de tekst enigszins aangepast en ontstonden diverse varianten op het lied. Gaandeweg ontwikkelde de melodie zich tot een officieus platvloers patriottisch volkslied.)

(Lily the Pink heeft echt bestaan. Haar echte naam was Lydia Pinkham (1819-1883) en ze werd bekend door het geneesmiddel Lydia Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, dat ze in de jaren zeventig van de 19e eeuw op de markt bracht. Dit alcoholische middel was een medicijn tegen onder andere menstruatiepijn en overgangsverschijnselen. Hoewel het ook werkzaam zou zijn tegen rug- en nierklachten, werd het middel verkocht als een speciaal medicijn voor vrouwen.

In 1911 kwam het middel ook in Nederland op de markt onder de naam Lydia E. Pinkham’s Plantaardig Mengsel. Na enkele jaren verdween het echter weer. De werking van het middel wordt betwist en critici zien Lydia Pinkham tegenwoordig dan ook als kwakzalver.

In de coupletten van Lily the Pink gebruiken verschillende mensen het middel, waarna er vreemde dingen met ze gebeuren. Het liedje over Lydia Pinkham heeft al een lange geschiedenis. Er zijn bronnen uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog die het liedje al beschrijven. Toen was de tekst nog een beetje anders, maar het onderwerp was hetzelfde.

Tijdens carnaval 1969 werd het nummer ook in een Nederlandse vertaling als Drinke Totteme Zinke een hit. Het oorspronkelijke onderwerp is in dit liedje losgelaten, hun teksten gaan over te diep in het glaasje kijken.)
