(Enkele dagen later op 17 december 1964 nog voor de kerstdagen wordt, op last van de Amsterdamse officier van justitie mr. J. Hartsuiker, het REM-eiland voor de kust bij Noordwijk door leden van de Rijkspolitie met behulp van marine-helikopters en het vliegkampschip Valkenburg bezet. Alle apparatuur wordt in beslag genomen. Omdat op 12 december 1964 in de Tweede Kamer een noodwet is aangenomen die uitzendingen vanaf een platform in de Noordzee verbiedt, stoppen op 14 december 1964 de uitzendingen van TV Noordzee. Radio Noordzee wordt tijdens de bezetting uit de lucht gehaald. Radio Noordzee was op 19 juli 1964 begonnen. TV Noordzee had vanaf 15 augustus 1964 uitgezonden.

In veel Nederlandse huiskamers werd driftig geknutseld met klerenhangers, punaises en antennedraad. Indien op de juiste manier in elkaar gezet en opgehangen kon zo een antenne worden gemaakt, waarmee de eerste uitzendingen van de REM konden worden ontvangen. Voor de echte liefhebbers was ook een echte antenne te koop.

Door mr. Henri Minderop, advocaat in Den Haag en gedelegeerd commissaris van de Reclame Exploitatie Maatschappij (REM), wordt op 4 november 1964 de Televisie Radio Omroep Stichting (TROS) opgericht. Hij is hiertoe gekomen nadat in de Tweede Kamer het wetsvoorstel (in de volksmond de anti-REM-wet genoemd) is ingediend. De TROS wordt op 1 oktober 1966 als aspirant-omroep toegelaten tot het publieke bestel. In 1974 wordt het eiland overgenomen door Rijkswaterstaat en aangepast. De antenne wordt verwijderd en op het platform wordt een meetstation ingericht. Omdat het eiland in slechte toestand verkeert en wetgeving ter plaatse geen ongebruikte bouwwerken toestaat, is het eiland in september 2006 gesloopt.)
