De gemoederen lopen zo hoog op dat André van Duin besluit op te stappen. Op 21 oktober 1973 is hij voor het laatst op RNI te horen. Ook Ferry de Groot neemt ontslag. Vanaf januari 1974 zijn beiden bij de NCRV op Hilversum 3 te horen met de Dikvoormekaarshow. Tot en met 27 april 1985 is de Dikvoormekaarshow wekelijks bij de NCRV te beluisteren als vast onderdeel van het programma Los Vast op de zaterdagmiddag.)

Sneltrein 164 Leeuwarden – Rotterdam rijdt met 125 km/h het gele sein voorbij dat op remwegafstand vooraf gaat aan het rode sein voor de splitsing. De machinist merkt dit gele sein niet op. De machinist van de sneltrein ziet het rode sein, zet een remming in, maar kan niet voorkomen dat hij met 107 km/h vrijwel frontaal in botsing komt met de tegemoetkomende stoptrein 464 Rotterdam-Gouda-Amsterdam. Er komen 91 mensen, waaronder de beide machinisten om bij de botsing en 54 anderen raken zwaargewond. Later overlijden nog twee zwaargewonden in ziekenhuizen. Als gevolg van dit ongeluk wordt invoering van de automatische treinbeïvloeding (ATB) in Nederland versneld ingevoerd.)
