(Vandaag precies 76 jaar geleden op 14 februari 1942 wordt in Rotterdam zonder zelfs maar het minste feestgedruis de Maastunnel in gebruik genomen. Op 13 mei 1933 nam de gemeenteraad het principebesluit voor de aanleg van een tunnel. Het duurde echter nog tot 15 juni 1937 eer burgemeester mr. P.J. Droogleever Fortuyn met enig ceremonieel het startsein kon geven. Na veel getouwtrek met ‘Den Haag’ over de kosten mocht uiteindelijk de door B&W zo gewenste vierbaans autotunnel, alsmede de voorzieningen voor fietsers en voetgangers worden aangelegd. In 1944 wordt de Maastunnel door de Duitsers voorzien van explosieven, zodat de tunnel op elk gewenst moment kan worden opgeblazen. Dit gebeurd uiteindelijk niet, omdat waarschijnlijk de ontsteking van de explosieven door het verzet onklaar is gemaakt.)
