(Het eerste McDonald’s-restaurant werd geopend in 1940 door de broers Dick en Mac McDonald, zonen van Schotse immigranten in San Bernardino, Californië. De hamburger werd definitief op de wereldkaart gezet nadat in 1954 Ray Kroc, vertegenwoordiger in milkshakemachines, de broers McDonald ontmoette. Kroc was nieuwsgierig naar het bedrijf dat zoveel van zijn machines kocht. Hij doorzag de potentie van het drive-thru hamburgerconcept en werd franchise agent. Op 15 april 1955 opent Kroc zijn eerste McDonald’s in Des Plaines, Illinois, drie maanden later gevolgd door een tweede zaak. In 1959 opent Kroc al zijn 100ste restaurant en in 1961 koopt hij de broers McDonald uit voor 2,7 miljoen dollar. Onder leiding van Kroc wordt de formule groot. In 1971 wordt in Europa het eerste McDonald’s fastfood-keten-restaurant geopend in Zaandam, Nederland.)

(In 1936 creëerde John uit den Bogaard de figuur Swiebertje, een zwerver vol streken en kattenkwaad en met een hart van goud, die geregeld opdoemt in een dorpje waar de goede tijd heeft stilgestaan en waar Swiebertje de mensen dan ook nog een beetje vrolijker maakt. De NCRV besluit in 1955 een Swiebertje-boek voor televisie te bewerken. Op 20 april 1955 komt Swiebertje op televisie tot leven; Joop Doderer speelt de zwerver. Guus Hermus is de burgemeester, Coba Kelling Saartje en Tony Foletta Bromsnor. De laatste aflevering van de immens populaire jeugdserie wordt op 25 april 1975 uitgezonden.
