(Twee weken later op 29 april 1913 wordt een octrooi verleend voor de ritssluiting. In 1893 wordt de ritssluiting uitgevonden door Whitcomb Judson. Het moderne ontwerp van de rits komt echter van zijn schoonzoon, Gideon Sundback. Pas in 1935 is de kledingfabrikant overtuigd door de rits. Want eerst zat de rits alleen in herenkleding. Maar toen ze plastic ritsen in flitsende kleuren gingen maken gingen de dames ook overstag. Tegenwoordig wordt ongeveer driekwart van de ritsen vervaardigd in China.)

(Op 14 mei 1913 wordt het Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, hét museum van de Gouden Eeuw geopend. Het museum dankt zijn naam aan Frans Hals, een van de beroemdste kunstschilders uit de 17e eeuw. Er zijn elf schilderijen van hem te zien. Het gebouw was oorspronkelijk een Oudemannenhuis, werd gebouwd in 1607-1611 in opdracht van het stadsbestuur van Haarlem. Om de bouw te financieren werden een rederijkersfeest en een grote loterij georganiseerd, met een totale opbrengst van maar liefst 55.000 gulden. Op 1 februari 1609 betrokken de eerste oude mannen het gebouw. Het waren toen kleine huisjes naast elkaar, gebouwd rondom een vierkante binnentuin. In elk huisje woonden twee heren. Er konden maximaal 60 oude mannen gehuisvest worden.)

(Op 29 mei 1913 gaat  in het Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Parijs Le Sacre du Printemps in première. Het geldt als een van de meest revolutionaire werken van de 20e eeuw. Het is een ballet van Sergej Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes op muziek van de Russische componist Igor Stravinsky, met een choreografie van de beroemde danser Vaslav Nijinsky en met decor- en kostuumontwerpen van de kunstenaar en archeoloog Nicholas Roerich.)
