(Drie dagen later op 21 april 1960 beginnen de uitzendingen van Radio Veronica. “U luistert naar Radio Veronica op de 198 meter, op de 33 meterband en de FM.” Er klinkt muziek en de omstreden zender is in de lucht. Ietwat hovaardig begonnen, want op de lange golf en FM wordt helemaal niet uitgezonden en dat zal nooit gebeuren ook. Dat staat de vreugde van deze start niet in de weg. Het klinkt goed en wie weet kan er een extra adverteerders mee gestrikt worden. De stemming onder het boordpersoneel is prima. Ook de aandeelhouders en directie zien hun inspanningen van de laatste tijd beloond met dit resultaat.  De zender is eigendom van de VRON (Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland). Deze vereniging is op 15 oktober 1959 in het Amsterdamse Krasnapolsky opgericht tijdens een vergadering van ontevreden radiohandelaren. De vrije handel in radiotoestellen beleeft zware tijden. Herhaaldelijk krijgen handelaren een proces aan hun broek, omdat zij hun radio’s, pick-ups en televisies onder de adviesprijs aan de man brengen. Op deze vergadering legt voorzitter Bep Slootmans een idee op tafel. Hij wil een drijvend radiostation oprichten. In het Duitse Embden wordt door de VRON het oude lichtschip Borkum Riff gekocht. Ellen van Eck en Max Groen zijn de eerste presentatoren van programma’s op Radio Veronica. Omdat de zender slecht wordt ontvangen op 198 meter, besluit men na korte tijd op 192 meter middengolf uit te zenden.)
