Op 18 oktober 1932 houden zij het voor gezien – na 3501 uur met elkaar te hebben gedanst. Voor hun prestatie ontvangen Frank LoVecchio en Ruth Smith zeshonderd dollar. De negentienjarige Frank LoVecchio wordt later wereldberoemd als de zanger Frankie Laine.)

(De Afsluitdijk, die Noord-Holland met Friesland verbindt, is een beroemde dijk, misschien wel de beroemdste van Nederland. Op 28 mei 1932 om twee minuten over één ’s middags gillen stoomfluiten en sirenes en wordt de vlag gehesen. De Zuiderzee is niet meer, het laatste stroomgat, de Vlieter, wordt gesloten. De dijk is dicht en het IJsselmeer is geboren. De afsluiting dient twee grote doelen. De woeste Zuiderzee wordt getemd en dat garandeerd de veiligheid van het achterland tegen het oprukkende water. Verder maakt de Afsluitdijk het inpolderen van een deel van de Zuiderzee een stuk gemakkelijker; in het ontstane IJsselmeer zijn geen getijden meer.

Vijf jaar lang hadden duizenden arbeiders van de Maatschappij tot Uitvoering van Zuiderzeewerken hard gewerkt aan de bouw van de Afsluitdijk. Plannen tot afsluiting van de Zuiderzee waren er al in de 17de eeuw, maar het werd echt serieus toen ir. Cornelis Lely in 1891 met zijn plannen kwam. Die leidden uiteindelijk, nadat in 1916 Noord-Nederland door een watersnood was getroffen, tot de Zuiderzeewet van 1918. In 1919 richtte de regering een aparte overheidsdienst op voor de uitvoering van de inpolderingsplannen: de Dienst der Zuiderzeewerken. Deze dienst begon eigenlijk al in 1920 met de afsluiting van de Zuiderzee.)
