(De volgende dag op 18 mei 1969 wordt vanaf Kennedy Space Center de Apollo 10 gelanceerd. Het is de tweede Apollo-vlucht naar de maan. Het doel van de missie is het testen van de modules en het koppelen van de modules in een baan om de maan. Het is zogezegd de generale repetitie voor de echte maanlanding van Apollo 11. De maanlander daalt, met 2 astronauten aan boord, af tot slechts 15 kilometer boven het maanoppervlak. Voor de bemanning is dit natuurlijk minder leuk, zo dicht bij de maan en niet mogen landen. Tijdens deze vlucht is er voor het eerst een live televisie-uitzending in kleur vanuit de ruimte. Na ruim 60 uur in een baan om de maan te hebben verbleven landt de capsule op 26 mei 1969 in de Stille Oceaan en wordt opgepikt door de U.S.S. Princeton. De capsule wordt tentoongesteld in het Science Museum te Londen, Engeland.)

(De Lauwerszee was ontstaan tijdens de watersnood van 1280. Het kreeg de naam van de Lauwers, de grensrivier tussen de provincies Groningen en Friesland. De eerste plannen voor afsluiting van de Lauwerszee dateren al van 1849 en zijn afkomstig van waterstaatsingenieur Van Diggelen. Op 23 mei 1969 worden onder het toeziend oog van koningin Juliana de laatste twee caissons gekoppeld ingevaren en afgezonken. Op 25 mei 1969 is het dan eindelijk zover: op het moment dat de ebstroom uit de Lauwerszee ophoudt, sluit men alle 150 kleppen van de caissons tegelijk: de afsluiting is een feit. Het Lauwersmeer is geboren.)
