(In 1937 ging het eerste radiostation op FM de lucht in. Dit was W2XMN in New Jersey nabij New York. Wie denkt dat FM meteen een groot succes was heeft het goed mis. De meeste FM frequenties waren namelijk in handen van AM radiostations. Die prikten vervolgens hetzelfde signaal door wat ook op AM te horen was. Voor luisteraars was er dus weinig reden om een nieuwe dure FM ontvanger te kopen. Pas in de jaren ’60 kwam radio via FM echt van de grond. Eén van de redenen hiervoor was dat er uitgezonden ging worden in FM-Stereo. Op 1 juni 1961 gaan in Los Angeles en Chicago de eerste FM-stereo radiostations de lucht in. Door gebruik te maken van een linker- en rechter luidspreker wordt een ruimtelijk effect verkregen. Vooral bij muziekstations zorgt dit voor een betere uitzendkwaliteit.)

(„’t Is maar een pennelikker”, schreef E. J. Potgieter in 1842 boven zijn schotschrift op de kantoorklerk. In die tijd was de ganzenveer al een millennium lang in dienst. Als er eerst aan de punt werd gelikt, nam de schacht goed inkt op en lukte het om een letter of zeven na elkaar op papier te zetten. Halverwege de negentiende eeuw ruimde de veer het veld voor de kroontjespen. Dat hielp maar half: likken hoefde niet meer, maar de schrijver moest nog steeds zijn pen in de inkt dopen. Bovendien bleef een kachel onmisbaar, om de inkt te laten drogen. De speurtocht ging verder, naar een pen met ingebouwd inktreservoir. Een vervelend ongeluk met zo’n pen leidde, volgens de legende, tot de uitvinding van de vulpen. In 1884 moest verzekeringsagent Lewis Edson Waterman een contract ondertekenen en hij gebruikte daarvoor een pasgekochte pen met een inktreservoir. De uitvinding van de balpen staat op naam van een Hongaar László Biró. Hij ziet dat krantendrukkers sneldrogende inkt gebruiken, waardoor het krantenpapier niet te nat wordt en minder afgeeft. Op 10 juni 1943 vraagt Lazlo Biro samen met zijn broer Georg een nieuw patent aan bij het Europees Octrooibureau en brengen zij de eerste commerciële versies van de balpen, Biro Pens genaamd, op de markt.)
