(Op 2 juli 1949 gaat de zevenentwintigjarige Pete Felleman voor de VARA-microfoon zijn eigen programma Hitparade aankondigen. Hij brengt de Topsongs uit Amerika: de tien best-sellers van de maand, samengeperst in een half uur op de zaterdagmiddag ten gehore. Nederlands eerste Top 10 komt overigens niet helemaal overeen met de lijst van Billboard. In die jaren is het namelijk nog heel gebruikelijk dat een populaire song tegelijkertijd door meerdere artiesten wordt uitgebracht. Het is dus niet ongewoon, dat er meerdere uitvoeringen van een en hetzelfde liedje in de Billboard-lijsten staan. Niet al die versies bereiken dezelfde positie. Omdat de grootste hits in de VS nog niet automatisch in Nederland worden uitgebracht, moet Felleman er zelf voor zorgen dat de muziek vanuit Amerika naar Nederland komt. Hij schakelt daartoe zijn kennissen onder het KLM-personeel in.

Omdat de smaak van de Nederlandse liefhebber van populaire muziek niet zo blijkt te verschillen van die van de Amerikanen, haalt Felleman zich ironisch genoeg het ongenoegen van de platenmaatschappijen op de hals. Het komt namelijk herhaaldelijk voor dat een platenboer wordt geconfronteerd met een klant die op zoek is naar een door Felleman gedraaide, maar in Nederland niet leverbare plaat. Dan worden de platenmaatschappijen lastig gevallen met verzoeken muziek te leveren, die ze niet hebben aangekocht. “Wij bepalen zelf wel wat we uitbrengen en we laten ons niets door een willekeurige programmamaker voorschrijven”, zo krijgt Felleman van een wrevelig gestemde directeur van een platenmaatschappij te horen. Later zouden de platenbonzen daar heel anders over gaan denken. Felleman presenteert de Hitparade tot 1957.

Pete Felleman wordt beschouwd als de eerste diskjockey in Nederland. Op 6 juni 1947 maakt hij zijn debuut voor de VARA-microfoon in het programma Swing & Sweet, from Hollywood & 52nd Street. Hierin laat hij als eerste jazzmuziek op de Nederlandse radio horen. Pete Felleman trouwt met Marga Samsonowski die hem drie kinderen schenkt – Glenn in 1948, Britt in 1954 en Gina in 1956. Marga verlaat de presentator om een lesbische relatie aan te gaan met de pianiste Pia Beck. Pete Felleman wordt in 1992 op het North Sea Jazz Festival beloond met een Bird Award voor — in de woorden van het jury-rapport — zijn “grote verdiensten voor de jazz-muziek”. Hij overlijdt op 11 februari 2000 op 78-jarige leeftijd in zijn woonplaats Amstelveen.)
