(Twee dagen later op 21 juni 1948 introduceert Edward Wallerstein, de president van Columbia Records in New York de nieuwe vorm van een grammofoonplaat. De 30 cm (ofwel 12”) ook wel LP of album genoemd wordt gemaakt van vinyl en draait op 33 1/3 toeren per minuut. De schijf ontwikkeld door Peter Goldmark van CBS Laboratories, kan 23 minuten muziek bevatten, in tegenstelling tot de 3 minuten speelduur van de oude 78 toeren-plaat. Hoewel Columbia bereid is om de technologie met ze te delen, besluit RCA-Victor om zelf ook een nieuwe geluidsdrager te ontwikkelen.

Op 1 februari 1949 komen ze met singles kleine grammofoonplaten met een diameter van 17,5 (ofwel 7”) cm. Deze worden afgespeeld op 45 toeren per minuut. Het duurt echter tot 1955 voordat de single aanslaat bij de jeugd. Een paar jaar later gaan beide bedrijven alsnog elkaars produkten gebruiken en samenwerken. Tot de introductie van de compact disc in de jaren tachtig is de 45-toerenplaat de bestverkochte geluidsdrager.)
