(Eén week later op 28 juli 1928 wordt door prins Hendrik de Olympische Spelen in Amsterdam geopend. Koningin Wilhelmina weigert de openingsceremonie bij te wonen. Amsterdam had eerder geprobeerd om de Olympische Spelen te mogen organiseren, maar moest eerst oorlogsslachtoffer België (Antwerpen 1920) en IOC-baas De Coubertin’s Parijs (1924) voor laten gaan. Voor de Spelen van 1928 wordt Amsterdam verkozen boven Los Angeles. Voor het eerst wordt de Olympische vlam aangestoken tijdens de Olympische spelen. Dit gebeurt in het Olympisch Stadion door een medewerker van het gasbedrijf.

Nederland weet het thuisvoordeel uitstekend uit te buiten en komt tot grootse prestaties. Er is voor het eerst goud voor Nederlandse dames: de zwemster Marie Braun en de gymnastiekploeg van trainer Gerrit Kleerekoper. Charles Pahud de Mortanges wint zijn eerste individuele gouden medaille. De ruiterequipe weet het goud van 1924 te prolongeren. Bokser Bep van Klaveren wint goud in het vedergewicht. Bernard Leene en Daan van Dijk worden Olympisch kampioen op het onderdeel tandem. Met zes gouden medailles behaalt Nederland in het inofficiële medaille klassement de achtste plaats. De sluitingsceremonie is op 12 augustus 1928.)
