Na een onderbreking van 12 jaar door de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn dit de eerste Spelen sinds de zomerspelen van 1936 in Berlijn. De Zomerspelen zijn evenwel zeer sober. Het Olympisch dorp in Uxbridge bestaat uit vrij troosteloze legerbarakken, het vervoer is ontoereikend en voedingswaren zoals vlees, boter, melk en brood staan nog altijd op de bon. Zowel Duitsland als Japan worden van de Spelen uitgesloten. De Nederlandse Fanny Blankers-Koen behaalt grote successen in Londen. Ze pakt 4 gouden medailles bij het hardlopen; 100m, 200m, 80m horden en de 4x 100m estafette. Nel van Vliet wint op de 200 meter schoolslag zwemmen een gouden plak. De sluitingsceromonie is op 14 augustus 1948.)
