(Drie weken later op 23 augustus 1913 wordt in Kopenhagen het beeld De Kleine Zeemeermin onthuld, gemaakt door de beeldhouwer Edward Eriksen. De Kleine Zeemeermin is een beroemd sprookje van de Deense schrijver Hans Christian Andersen, dat voor het eerst is uitgegeven in 1836. Op 24 april 1963 wordt het beeld door een vandaal onthoofd. De daad wordt later opgeëist door de Deense kunstenaar Jørgen Nash. Disney maakt in 1989 een tekenfilm van het sprookje.)

(Op 28 augustus 1913 opent koningin Wilhelmina het Vredespaleis in Den Haag. Het idee om het Vredespaleis te bouwen kwam voort uit een discussie in 1900 tussen de Russische diplomaat Friedrich Martens en de Amerikaanse diplomaat Andrew Dickson White. Het betrof de noodzaak van passende huisvesting voor het Permanent Hof van Arbitrage, dat opgericht was tijdens de eerste Vredesconferentie van Den Haag in 1899. Om tot een goed ontwerp te komen, werd een internationale prijsvraag uitgeschreven. Het winnend ontwerp, in de Neo-Renaissance stijl, kwam van de hand van de Franse architect Louis M. Cordonnier. In 1907 werd symbolisch de eerste steen gelegd tijdens de tweede Vredesconferentie van Den Haag.)

(Op 31 augustus 1913 wordt in Eindhoven in opdracht van Gerard en Anton Philips PSV (Philips’ Sport Vereniging) opgericht. De clubkleuren zijn rood en wit. PSV begint als voetbalclub met alleen personeelsleden van Philips. In de eerste wedstrijd wordt er afgetrapt door Frits, de zoon van Anton Philips. Na 1928 mogen er ook mensen van buiten het bedrijf sporten. PSV doet al sinds 1914 mee aan de competitie. PSV wordt in 1929 voor het eerst landskampioen. Daarna wint het in 1950 voor het eerst de KNVB-beker. Halverwege de jaren ’70 is de eerste gouden periode voor de club, met voetballers als Willy van der Kuijlen en de gebroeders Willy en René van de Kerkhof wint PSV diverse nationale prijzen. In 1978 wordt de UEFA Cup gewonnen. Het Philips Stadion is het thuisstadion van de voetbalploeg en er is plaats voor 35.000 bezoekers. Alle zitplaatsen zijn verwarmd.)

(Op 8 september 1913 vertrekt het tot dusver grootste zeppelinluchtschip de L2 voor de eerste proefvlucht. Het is 260 meter lang en wordt aangedreven door vier motoren van 205 pk. Het kan 4000 liter bezine meevoeren en daardoor 50 uur in de lucht blijven. Op 17 oktober 1913 is het sprookje uit. In de beste toestand is het luchtschip op het vliegveld Johannistal opgestegen. Als het ongeveer 100 meter hoog is ziet men aan de achterste gondel een vlam, die in enkele ogenblikken een reuzenvlam wordt. Kort daarop volgt een heftige knal en het hele luchtschip vat vlam. Het brandend gevaarte stort onmiddellijk naar beneden; een verschrikkelijk geschreeuw klinkt uit de vlammen. Met donderend geraas stort ‘t “vuurschip” ongeveer 400 meter ten Westen van de luchtschepen-hangars op de grond. De gondels boren zich diep in het zand, het geraamte breekt in stukken en alleen het hoogtestuur van ’t reusachtige gevaarte blijft over. De spanten liggen als plat netwerk tegen de grond. De roef is geheel uit elkaar gescheurd en de motoren zijn diep in de grond doorgedrongen. Maar wat nog erger is, talrijke jonge mensenlevens zijn bij ‘t ongeluk omgekomen.)
