(In november 1894 verscheen het muziekvakblad Billboard Magazine voor het eerst op de Amerikaanse markt. Vanaf 5 mei 1900 lag Billboard als weekblad in schappen. In de editie van 27 juli 1940, die vanaf 20 juli 1940 in de winkels lag, werd de eerste officiële Amerikaanse hitparade gepubliceerd. Vóór die tijd hadden in het blad de verkoopoverzichten gestaan van alle platenmaatschappijen afzonderlijk. I’ll Never Smile Again van Tommy Dorsey staat bovenaan in deze eerste hitparade. Dit liedje werd op 23 mei 1940 opgenomen door Frank Sinatra met begeleiding van het orkest van Tommy Dorsey en de zanggroep the Pied Pipers. Het liedje werd geschreven door Ruth Lowe. Deze 78 toerenplaat staat twaalf weken aan de top. Vanaf die datum geeft de lijst een mix van verkoopcijfers, radio-airplay en platen weer die populair zijn in Amerikaanse jukeboxen.)

(Vandaag precies 78 jaar geleden op 27 juli 1940 maakt Bugs Bunny een van de bekendste tekenfilmfiguren ter wereld zijn entree in de cartoon A wild hare. Vooral bekend is zijn vraag: “What’s up, doc?” In al die jaren lukte het zijn immer achtervolgende belager Elmer Fudd niet om Bugs om te leggen. Zijn onvermoeibare pogingen om de haas naar de andere wereld te helpen hebben altijd tot gevolg dat de domme Elmer het slachtoffer wordt van de slimme en brutale Bugs. Bugs heeft inmiddels de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd bereikt, maar het ziet er niet naar uit dat hij ooit daadwerkelijk met pensioen zal gaan.)
