(Twee weken later op 15 augustus 1914 vaart het eerste schip, het Amerikaanse stoomschip Ancona, door het Panamakanaal. Al sinds de tijd van Columbus hebben mensen ervan gedroomd een kanaal te graven door de jungle van Panama. Het kanaal is een ruim 81 km lang. Het verbindt de Grote Oceaan met de Atlantische Oceaan. De gevaarlijke reis langs Kaap Hoorn wordt overbodig en het traject wordt met maar liefst 12.000 kilometer bekort, wat ongeveer een zestig dagen vaartijd scheelt.

De Fransman Ferdinand de Lesseps, de grote man achter het Suez-kanaal, begon met de bouw in 1881. Hij stuitte echter op onoverkomelijke technische moeilijkheden. Duizenden arbeiders lieten het leven als gevolg van malaria of de gele koorts. De bouw kwam stil te liggen en de in 1881 opgerichte bouwcompagnie ging in 1889 failliet. In dat jaar ging alles over in Amerikaanse handen. Het duurde nog tot 1907 voor de aanleg werd hervat. Een arts zette het project weer op de rails door de muskieten aan te pakken. Het kanaal werd geopend onder de slogan “A man, a plan, a canal: Panama”.)

(Vandaag precies 81 jaar geleden op 1 augustus 1936 worden door Adolf Hitler de Olympische Spelen in Berlijn geopend. Berlijn was in 1931 door het IOC verkozen boven Barcelona. Hoewel de Spelen aan Berlijn worden toegekend voordat de Nazi’s aan de macht komen in Duitsland, ziet de overheid de Spelen als een uitgelezen mogelijkheid om haar fascistische ideologie uit te dragen. De cineaste Leni Riefenstahl wordt aangesteld om een film te maken over de Spelen. De film Olympia kan bestempeld worden als pure propaganda, anderen beschouwen deze film nog steeds als de beste beelddocumentatie van welke Olympische Spelen dan ook. Hitler volgt het Olympisch handvest tot de letter op en beloofd geen enkele toespraak te houden tijdens de Spelen. Verder laat hij ook géén rassendiscriminatie toe op de Spelen, maar buiten het stadion draait de Duitse propagandamachine op volle toeren. Er worden in de straten optochten gehouden van de Hitler Jugend, overal zijn er gewapende soldaten aanwezig en er wapperden overal vlaggen met hakenkruisen. De sluitingsceremonie is op 16 augustus 1936.)

(Eén week later op de ochtend van zaterdag 8 augustus 1964 arriveren the Rolling Stones om vijf voor half elf met een vliegtuig van BEA op luchthaven Schiphol. De groep is door Paul Acket van het maandblad Muziek Expres naar Nederland gehaald voor een concert in het Kurhaus in Scheveningen. Op Schiphol geven the Rolling Stones een korte persconferentie. Hierna gaat het gezelschap, onder begeleiding van Paul Acket, naar Hotel Terminus in Den Haag. In de Theresiastraat, waar Paul Acket kantoor houdt, worden foto’s van the Rolling Stones genomen, terwijl zij een opengeslagen Muziek Expres in hun handen houden.

In het Kurhaus begint om acht uur ’s avonds het voorprogramma met Trix & The Paramounts, bandparodist André van Duin, Ritchie Clark & the Ricochets (de latere Motions), het duo the Telstars en the Fouryo’s. Zij worden aangekondigd door Jos Brink. Het publiek is echter alleen gekomen voor the Rolling Stones. Vooral the Telstars en the Fouryo’s worden met boegeroep weggejouwd. Een filmploeg van TV-Noordzee, dat onlangs met uitzendingen vanaf het REM-eiland is begonnen, verhoogt met felle filmlampen de onrust in de zaal. Om negen uur is het pauze. Er sneuvelen enkele ruiten.

Wanneer Bill Wyman achter het gordijn zijn basgitaar staat te stemmen, stormt het publiek naar voren. Jos Brink kondigt vier Rolling Stones aan. Deze blunder wordt niet door de fans gewaardeerd. The Rolling Stones beginnen hun optreden met Beautiful Delilah, gevolgd door Walkin’ The Dog. Hun fans zijn niet meer te houden. Het microfoonsnoer van Mick Jagger wordt kapotgetrokken. Hij is niet meer te horen. Inmiddels trapt de knokploeg van Paul Acket wild om zich heen. De politie doet zijn best om het podium vrij van fans te houden. Tijdens het derde nummer, Hi Heel Sneakers, vliegen de eerste leuningen en stoelzittingen door de lucht. Bij het vierde nummer, Susie Q, weet Joost den Draayer een Veronica-microfoon onder de neus van Mick Jagger te duwen. Op de vraag “Have you ever seen something like this?” zegt Mick Jagger alleen maar “No!”.

Als de fans in de zaal op hun kop staan, wordt de stroom op het podium uitgeschakeld. The Rolling Stones doden de tijd met het spelen van een akoestische versie van Not Fade Away. Om kwart voor tien beëindigt de politie dit eerste Nederlandse live-optreden van the Rolling Stones. De volgende dag zijn zij alweer op weg naar Manchester in Engeland voor hun volgende optreden.
