(In 1953 ligt voetbalclub VVV met de KNVB in de clinch omdat zij de spelers ging betalen. De voetbalbond was fel gekant tegen betalingen aan spelers. Betaald voetbal kwam er uiteindelijk toch nadat in 1953 de NBVB als professionele voetbalbond en tegenhanger van de KNVB werd opgezet. Het was echter niet VVV wat aan de NBVB-competitie deelnam, maar Sportclub Venlo dat op 3 augustus 1954 was opgericht. De eerste wedstrijd in het Nederlandse betaald voetbal, op 14 augustus 1954, is de oefenwedstrijd tussen Alkmaar ’54 (voorloper van AZ) en Sportclub Venlo, die in Alkmaar met 3-0 gewonnen wordt door de thuisploeg. Na de fusie van de KNVB en de NBVB op 25 november 1954 fuseren een dag later ook VVV en Sportclub Venlo, tijdelijk de naam Sportclub VVV ’03 dragend. In de eerste competitiewedstrijd na de fusie weet de Venlose ploeg meteen Ajax in De Meer te verslaan.)
