(Hawaii wordt sinds circa 400 bewoond door Polynesiërs, waarschijnlijk uit de buurt van Tahiti. Deze waren bijzonder goede zeevaarders en spraken een Polynesische taal, het Hawaïaans. Hoewel wordt aangenomen dat de eilanden mogelijk door de Spanjaarden reeds in de 16de eeuw gezien zijn, is James Cook de officiële Europese ontdekker van de eilanden, die hij de naam Sandwich Islands gaf. In 1893 pleegden een aantal Amerikaanse suikerplanters een staatsgreep en plaatsten koningin Liliukalani onder arrest en openden de deur voor Amerikaanse inlijving later dat jaar. De aanval op Pearl Harbor (op het eiland Oahu) op 7 december 1941 door het keizerlijke leger van Japan had als gevolg dat de Verenigde Staten zich gingen mengen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het gebied bleef een Amerikaans territorium tot 1959. Inmiddels was de oorspronkelijke bevolking een kleine minderheid in eigen land geworden en besluiten zij een Staat van de VS te worden, hetgeen gebeurt op 21 augustus 1959. Slechts één van de eilanden, Niihau, heeft nog een geheel autochtoon karakter. Het is in zijn geheel privé bezit en is niet voor buitenstaanders toegankelijk, tenzij op uitnodiging.)
