(Eén week later op 29 augustus 1893 verkrijgt de Amerikaanse uitvinder Whitcomb Judson uit Chicago, Illinois octrooi op de voorloper van de moderne ritssluiting. Hij noemt deze de “kramsluiter” en demonstreert deze op de Wereldtentoonstelling  in Chicago. Hij slaagt er echter nooit in om deze uitvinding met succes op de markt te brengen. Deze wordt later verbeterd door Gideon Sunbach, een Zweeds-Amerikaanse ingenieur en de naam ritssluiting of “zipper” wordt in 1923 bedacht door de B.F. Goodrich Company, die de Sunbach-versie gaat gebruiken voor rubberlaarzen voor het Amerikaanse leger.)
