In 1891 startte Gerard Leonard Frederik Philips onder de firmanaam Philips & Co. met de productie van kooldraadlampen. (Op 19 september 1912 wordt in Breda de voetbalclub NAC opgericht na een fusie tussen NOAD (Nooit Ophouden Altijd Doorzetten) en ADVENDO (Aangenaam Door Vermaak En Nuttig Door Ontspanning). De samenvoeging van beide clubnamen levert de naam NAC (Noad Advendo Combinatie) op. NAC begint te spelen in de 2de Klasse Zuid op het terrein van de Bond van Lichamelijke Opvoeding. Het speelt op 3 november 1912 haar eerste wedstrijd in eigen huis tegen EMM uit Vlissingen. (Vandaag precies 79 jaar geleden op 24 augustus 1940 gaat de derde fase in de slag om Engeland van start en duurt tot 6 september 1940. De Luftwaffe spits haar acties tegen de RAF-vliegvelden toe en maakt minstens 1000 vluchten. Het vliegveld Manston, het meest zuidelijk gelegen RAF jagerstation wordt uitgeschakeld en RAF-station North-Weald raakt ernstig beschadigd. De Luftwaffe verliest 38 en de RAF 22 vliegtuigen. Een dag later op 25 augustus 1940 voert de RAF zijn eerste luchtaanval op Berlijn uit.)

Op 26 augustus 1940 wordt in Waalwijk voetbalclub RKC (Rooms Katholieke Combinatie) opgericht door het samengaan van HEC, WVB en Hercules. Bij de invoering van het betaald voetbal in 1954 is de club nog geen hoogvlieger en blijft RKC een amateurclub. RKC Waalwijk speelt in geel-blauw verticaalgestreepte shirts met blauwe broek. De club speelt zijn thuiswedstrijden in het Mandemakers Stadion.)

(Op 31 augustus 1940 komt de eertste uitgave van Vrij Nederland uit. De verzetskrant is door protestante jongeren opgericht. Na de oorlog gaat Vrij Nederland verder als weekblad.
