(Een week later op 4 september 1948 na een vijftigjarige ambtsperiode doet koningin Wilhelmina in het Paleis op de Dam troonsafstand ten gunste van haar dochter Juliana. De daaropvolgende jaren brengt zij door op paleis Het Loo. Haar laatste optreden in het openbaar is bij de watersnoodramp van 1953, als zij zich (met kenmerkende voortvarendheid) onmiddellijk laat overbrengen naar het rampgebied.)

(Op 6 september 1948 legt koningin Juliana de Eed af in de Nieuwe Kerk te Amsterdam en vindt de inauguratie van Juliana als Koningin der Nederlanden plaats. Juliana is als koningin een heel ander type dan haar moeder. Onder Juliana krijgt de monarchie de bijnaam “fietsende monarchie”. Juliana staat dicht bij het volk en ze laat zich dan ook mevrouw noemen in plaats van Majesteit. De koningin komt tijdens haar periode op de troon voor enkele hete vuren te staan. Maar zelfs de Greet Hoffmans- en de Lockheed affaire, waarbij haar man Bernhard betrokken is, kunnen haar goede naam geen schade toebrengen. Juliana doet op 30 april 1980 afstand van de troon en blijft tot haar dood op 20 maart 2004 populair bij het Nederlandse volk.)
