Van de 36 die werkelijk de frontlijn bereiken zijn de meeste binnen korte tijd uitgeschakeld. Op 1 juli 1916 werd het grond offensief van de Britten onder Haig en de Fransen onder Foch ingezet voornamelijk ter ontlasting van de Fransen die bij Verdun onder zware Duitse druk stonden. Reeds op de eerste dag leden de Britten het buitensporige verlies van 57.470 man: 19.240 doden, 35.493 gewonden, 2.152 vermisten en 585 krijgsgevangen. Op 19 november 1916 staken de Engelsen en de Fransen de strijd. In totaal komen er 420.000 Engelsen, 200.000 Fransen en 450.000 Duitsers om het leven. Het slagveld bevindt zich ruwweg in de driehoek gevormd door de Franse steden Albert, Bapaume en Péronne.)

(Op 5 september 1944 de euforie van Dolle Dinsdag, meent men in Nederland dat de geallieerde troepen reeds de grote rivieren zijn overgestoken en dat de bevrijding derhalve op handen is. Oorzaak van dit gerucht is een foutieve mededeling van Radio Oranje dat de geallieerden Breda hebben bevrijd. NSB-ers en Duitsers worden door deze bericht op het verkeerde been gezet en kiezen in allerijl het hazenpad richting Duitsland. Voor een groot deel van Nederland zou de bevrijding pas in de loop van 1945 komen.)

(Op 17 september 1944 landen Britse troepen in Arnhem, als onderdeel van Operation Market Garden. In de hoop een beslissende stoot te maken naar het hart van Duitsland laat veldmaarschalk Montgomery tussen Eindhoven en Nijmegen twee Amerikaanse luchtlandingdivisies landen. Bij Arnhem lukt het de Britse eerste Luchtlandingsdivisie om een bruggehoofd over de Rijn te vormen ten gunste van het uit België oprukkende Britse tweede leger. Ruim 600 parachutisten kunnen de noordelijke oprit van de Arnhemse verkeersbrug nemen. Ze raken echter geïsoleerd door de onverwacht doeltreffende tegenacties van Duitse pantsereenheden. Deze houden de aanvoer van versterkingen tegen. De rest van de groep moet noodgedwongen op 21 september de strijd staken. De overige troepen van de Britse divisie weten zich in het omsingelde Oosterbeek staande te houden. In de nacht van 25 op 26 september worden ruim 2.400 van de 10.000 man luchtlandingstroepen heroverd op Nijmegen. Door het mislukken van Operation Market Garden duurt de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa een half jaar langer.)
