(Vandaag precies 64 jaar geleden op 4 september 1954 wordt in het centrum van Assen, in de tuin van het Drents Museum, een beeld van Bartje onthuld. Omdat dit stenen beeld geregeld vandalisme krijgt te verduren wordt het vervangen door een bronzen replica. Het origineel staat nu in de hal van het Asser gemeentehuis.

Bartje Bartels is de hoofdfiguur uit de boeken van Anne de Vries. Het is een jongetje dat opgroeit in een arm Drents keuterboerengezin en dat zich gaandeweg steeds minder wil schikken naar zijn lot. In plaats van in de voetsporen van zijn vader te treden als boerenarbeider wil Bartje de wijde wereld in trekken. Toch beschikt het lot anders, nadat Bartje enige jaren als knecht heeft gewerkt krijgt hij na het overlijden van zijn vader de zorg over het gezin op zich.

Eén tekst is beroemd geworden. Als moeder weer bruine bonen opschept, en vader oproept tot gebed, trekt Bartje zijn bord onder de opscheplepel vandaan en roept: “Ik bid nie veur bruune boon’n”. Naar aanleiding van de boeken wordt een televisieserie gemaakt door Willy van Hemert waarin alle rollen worden gespeeld door autochtone Drenten, veelal amateur-toneelspelers. De titelrol wordt gespeeld door de jonge Jan Krol. De dialogen zijn in Drentse streektaal, waardoor het nodig is te ondertitelen. De serie wordt in zeven afleveringen uitgezonden door de NCRV, te beginnen met 27 december 1972.)

(Op 23 september 1954 wordt ter gelegenheid van de 100ste geboortedag van ir. Cornelis Lely door H.M. de Koningin op de Afsluitdijk een monument onthuld. Hij presenteerde een wetsontwerp tijdens zijn tweede ministerschap (1871-1901 tot drooglegging van de Zuiderzee.)
